Emotions

Emotions Are Important. Our emotions are a critical source of
information. Our emotions are necessary for us to make decisions.
Studies show that when a person has an accident in which those
structures of the brain that deal with emotions is damaged the person
cannot make even simple decisions. Why? Because the person has lost
the capability to feel and thus, evaluate their decision. Social
Neuroscience has demonstrated cognition requires emotion in order to
complete the transaction of the decision-making process. Without
emotion, cognition remains incomplete and unfulfilled.

Our Bodies Talk. Our emotions help us communicate with others. Our
facial expressions, for example, can convey a wide range of emotions.
If we look sad or hurt, we are letting the other person know that we
need their help. If we are verbally skilled we will be able to express
more of our emotional needs and thereby have a better chance of
filling them. If we are good at listening to the emotional needs of
others, we are better able to help them feel understood, important,
and cared about. The emotionally intelligent person is able to read,
with some accuracy, the feelings conveyed non-verbally by those with
whom he or she interacts.

Stress Reduces Our Ability to Feel. As our society has become more
pressured and we are constantly overwhelmed by stress, our ability to
recognize and respond to our own feelings and those of others is
diminished. Overwhelming feelings of stress result in a reduced
ability to manage intense feelings and an increase in stress-related
disorders. Consequently, there is an increase in road rage, desk rage,
air rage, voice-mail rage, verbal and physical aggression, violence
against others, substance abuse, and other inappropriate displays of
anger.

Emotions Bring People Together. Our emotions are perhaps the greatest
potential source of uniting all members of the human race. This is
what makes us human and creates the potential for our humanity.
Clearly, our various religious, cultural and political institutions
have not united us. Far too often, in fact, they have even divided us.
Emotions, on the other hand, are universal.

Emotions are Universal. The emotions of…

• Empathy - The ability to understand and share someone else’s
feelings.

• Compassion - The ability to care about and give to someone else.

• Cooperation - The ability to work together to achieve a common
goal.

• Forgiveness - The ability to pardon someone for a grievance against
you or against someone one or something you care about.

All of these emotions have the potential to unite us as people. Our
thoughts may tend to divide us, whereas our emotions, if given the
chance, will unite us in our humanity.

Anger Management Expands

Anger management at Associates in Professional Counseling and Coaching has expanded to include services for executives, teachers, physicians, students, employees and organizations. Recently presentation have been made at United Air Lines, Aon Insurance and other major companies in the United States.

2008 forcast from George Anderson

Just as 2007 topped all of the years before, it is almost a certainty
that 2008 will do the same. As one of the elder statesmen in anger
management and executive coaching, here are my predictions for the
year 2008:

1.) Legislation will be introduced, passed and signed into law in
California, mandating standards for Certified Anger Management
Providers. Other states like Texas will quickly follow California's
lead.

2.) Prisons and Jails throughout the nation will begin providing anger
management to all inmates whose offenses include aggression or
violence.

3.) Anger management skills will join substance abuse intervention and
GED as needed skills for prison and jail inmates.

4.) New York and Chicago will follow the lead of the Los Angeles
Unified School District in providing anger management in after school
programs as well as Adult Education Programs. Many smaller school
districts will contract out for these services.

5.) Large, small and medium sized businesses will recognize that anger
management is a cost saving intervention and move to offer anger
management in their staff development programs.

6.) Employee assistance professionals will be forced to concede their
lack of training and experience in anger management and seek to
include anger management as one of the core courses for the CEAP
certification.

7.) Legislation introduced in the last session of the Texas State
Legislature by Senator Whitmire from Houston, requiring anger
management for all middle school students, will be passed and
implemented in Texas.

8.) Anderson & Anderson will revise its popular anger management
curriculum, making it consistent with the new California Legislation.

9.) Providers with limited training and curricula in executive
coaching for physicians will quickly recognize their limitations and
seek additional training and certification in this new niche in anger
management.

10.) Anderson & Anderson will develop a new curriculum for executive
coach certification training. This training will focus on executive
coaching/anger management for physicians.

Executive Coaching/Anger Management For "Disruptive Physicians"

Executive Coaching/Anger Management For "Disruptive Physicians"

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who is a Certified Anderson &
Anderson Provider, I pursued continuing education and advanced
training with Mr. George Anderson, MSW, LCSW, BCD, CAMF, in the
specialized niche of Executive Coaching. A substantial number of hours
were spent learning and assimilating the Anderson and Anderson Method
and materials used in Executive Coaching. A substantial number of
hours were also spent in direct consultation with Mr. Anderson
critiquing my levels of understanding, assimilation and abilities of
delivery intervention.

After competency and trust was established, Mr. Anderson
altruistically gave me my first Executive Coaching-Physician referral.
This granted me the opportunity to implement the Anderson and Anderson
Method of Executive Coaching with a substantial number of hours of
advanced training received from Mr. Anderson. The Physician/Surgeon
received the 2-day, (12) hour Executive Coaching intervention with
surprising openness and receptiveness. I debriefed in-depth with Mr.
Anderson regarding the reciprocal experiences of the Executive
Coaching intervention. The outcome appeared to be very successful.

Building upon the foundation of competency and trust, Mr. Anderson
gave me my second Executive Coaching-Physician referral. This
experience was more unique than the first involving two healthcare
professionals. Mr. Anderson and I conducted two separate, simultaneous
Executive Coaching intervention sessions with a one-hour "Conjoint"
summary Executive Coaching session. This was clearly an "Out Of The
Box" experience. The outcome from direct observation and feedback was
from, objective appearances, phenomenal. Again, a significant number
of hours were spent with Mr. Anderson debriefing on our respective and
collective experiences from this most unique Executive Coaching
Intervention.

>From "First-Hand" experiences, Mr. Anderson has and is "Raising the
Bar", and "Setting the Standard" for Executive Coaching. The
prerequisite criteria established by Mr. Anderson, for the Anderson
and Anderson Method of Executive Coaching and Anger Management, will
saliently present the issue of qualified, competent and experienced
Executive Coaches who are able to provide "Quality Care," to Executive
Coaching clients.

Angry or Disruptive Physicians and Nurses

Out of respect for those who serve and protect the health of our
nation, let me first say that the use of the term disruptive referring
to nurses and doctors who present with anger management problems
oversimplify a much more complex problem that needs a deeper analysis.
William Bridges in his book Transitions, describes change as having
three distinct components -the end, neutral zone and the beginning. He
further purports that the neutral zone is the most difficult stage
where the person or system going through the change is in a kind of no
mans land, trying to find its place to a new beginning. Let me suggest
that our country's health care system is in that no mans lands. While
I will never excuse the abusive behavior that is displayed by some
doctors or nurses, it is helpful to determine the roots of this
emerging problem.

Anger management problems are always associated with problems managing
stress, not knowing how to communicate effectively and poor emotional
intelligence. My work with doctors, and the discussion with colleagues
who have also done extensive work with doctors, suggest that the
stress associated handling the changing face of health care is a major
contributor to anger management problems.

There was a time when the health care professional said they needed to
perform a procedure, they were not questioned. The resources were made
available to make this treatment a reality. Such power reinforced the
elevated view that was held of health care professions, especially the
medical doctor. Such supremacy was not to last forever, because the
advent of manage care limited the power of the doctor and placed some
of this power in the hands of insurance providers who ultimately may
determine care based on economics and medical necessity. Other
stressors include doctors whose skills suddenly become obsolete
because of technology, shortages of nursing staff, lower reimbursement
rates form insurance companies, the threat of lawsuits, rising
insurance premiums and the changing hospital culture that requires
doctors to display more restraint during periods of frustration.

Some medical professionals tend to have difficulty adapting to such
changes and fall victim to anger outbursts towards colleagues and even
patients. It may not be in the hands of doctors and nurses to change
the system, but it is their responsibly to have the skills to adapt.
Therefore seeking help to improve stress management, communication
skills and emotional intelligence may be one option to manage the
changes that plague the health care system.

Disruptive Physicians and Abusive Physicians use Executive Anger Management Coaching

As a part of the medical training of all physicians, it is necessary
to rotate through all of the specialties in medicine. This means that
all physicians must rotate through a period of exposure in psychiatry
as well as all other areas of medicine. One of the obvious reasons for
this practice is to make sure that all physicians have enough
knowledge and experience to appropriately make use of all specialties
other than their own.

Unfortunately, psychiatry is an area of specialization which is often
viewed by surgeons, cardiologists, oncologists and neurologists as
somewhat soft as it relates to being scientific. Psychiatry is
considered to be highly subjective with questionable scientific
evidence. In addition, any mental health intervention carries with it
a stigma which may be damaging to a physician's professional career.

One of the first questions posed by physicians inquiring about
resources for abusive physicians is "Do I have to undergo a
psychiatric assessment?". This question is extremely important to any
practicing physician, as it will almost certainly affect his or her
entire career if there is anything in any file suggesting impairment
or even an assessment. Therefore, if the goal of a program is to help
abusive physicians who are not addicted to drugs/alcohol or
psychiatrically disturbed, it must not include a mandatory psychiatric
assessment.

Anderson & Anderson is the largest provider of Executive Coaching/
Anger Management for abusive physicians in the nation. We have many
case examples of physicians who purposely selected our program for its
lack of focus on psychopathology. This model uses an assessment
designed to determine the physician's level of functioning in
recognizing and managing stress, anger, assertive communication,
emotional intelligence and motivation to change. The Anderson &
Anderson Executive Coaching/Anger Management course provides skill
enhancement in the same four areas mentioned above: stress management,
anger management, assertive communication and emotional intelligence.
Participants who demonstrate a lack of motivation to change are not
accepted into the program.
